On Saturday, April 26, Fort Bend County residents gathered at the University of Houston’s Sugar Land campus for a well-attended candidate forum ahead of the May 3 elections.
The event, organized by Emgage, BakerRipley, and the League of Women Voters of Fort Bend, provided a platform for voters to engage directly with candidates running for positions in Sugar Land and Stafford city councils, as well as the Fort Bend ISD and Lamar CISD school boards.
Alana Rodriguez-Fox of the League of Women Voters emphasized the importance of local elections, stating, “We believe that local elections make a really big difference in our day-to-day lives, a lot of times more so than state or federal elections.”
The forum aimed to boost civic engagement and voter turnout, which have historically been low in the county.
The forum featured candidates such as Cheryl Buford, Allison Drew, and Angie Wierzbicki for Fort Bend ISD Position 7, and Rick Garcia, Afshi Charania, and Angela Collins for Position 3. Attendees had the opportunity to hear directly from the candidates about their platforms and visions for the community.
This event was part of a broader effort to increase voter participation in the upcoming elections, with early voting having concluded on April 29.
