H-E-B, serving as the title sponsor for the Houston Association of Black Journalists (HABJ) Annual Scholarship and Fundraiser Gala, awarded scholarships to 12 exceptional students from across the Houston area, supporting their educational aspirations.
Leading the company’s presence was James Harris, H-E-B’s Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and Supplier Diversity, along with nearly 20 representatives. Their attendance underscored the tangible impact of H-E-B’s investment in empowering youth through education.
HABJ aimed to expand its reach this year, connecting with colleges across the region to ensure more students, including those unaware of HABJ’s mentorship and development programs, could benefit. Scholarship recipients hailed from institutions like Prairie View A&M University, the University of Houston, Texas Southern University, Houston Community College, Lamar University, North American University, and the College of Biblical Studies.
A Night of Recognition and Reflection
The gala brought together Houston’s media and political leaders for an unforgettable evening at the historic Eldorado Ballroom. The late Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee’s daughter, Congresswoman Erica Lee Carter, was also in attendance as HABJ honored her mother for her work in the Houston community.
HABJ also took a moment to remember those who passed away this year.
Community and Celebration in Full Swing
DJ Chilly Bill Smith of KTSU 90.9 FM kept the energy high, infusing the event with his legendary musical stylings. The night was more than a fundraiser—it was a powerful celebration of community, generosity, and Black excellence.
HABJ President Nakia Cooper praised the collective effort behind the gala’s success, highlighting contributions from key board members and volunteers, including Rebecca Briscoe, Vannessa Wade, Vicky Pink, Joy Sewing, Shavonne Herndon, Jennifer Moore, Bridgett Holden, and Ninfa Saavedra.
As HABJ continues to break barriers and foster opportunities for aspiring journalists, this year’s gala reinforced its commitment to creating lasting change and celebrating the enduring spirit of excellence.
