Khambrel Marshall, a respected journalist and familiar face on KPRC 2, recently announced his retirement after a remarkable nearly five-decade-long career in the news industry. Throughout his 24 years with KPRC 2, Marshall became a beloved figure in Houston, known for his dynamic presence and commitment to journalistic excellence.
Reflecting on his journey, Marshall shared, “I can’t believe how many generations of television change I’ve been through. I started when we were shooting film… to tape and various iterations of tape. It’s been interesting over these years, and of course, the people I’ve worked with for many, many, many years are no longer here.”
His career spanned six stations across five states, where he made significant contributions as a news anchor, sports director, executive producer, meteorologist, and host of the weekly favorite Houston Newsmakers. Marshall always regarded KPRC 2 as a second family, often joking about spending more time at work than at home.
Regarding his success, Marshall humbly credits faith and positive energy. “I didn’t have this big plan,” he said. “I just kind of opened doors that God would open for me and stepped through with faith.”
Nakia Cooper, President of the Houston Association of Black Journalists, praised Marshall’s influence, saying, “Khambrel has been a true community leader, media powerhouse, and a mentor to myself and so many others in the industry. His genius will be missed.”
Marshall’s tenure witnessed significant changes in the news industry, especially in terms of diversity. He has observed a gradual increase in representation on-screen, though he believes more work is needed behind the scenes to reflect community diversity.
In addition to his professional achievements, Marshall is known for his philanthropic efforts, supporting organizations like Big Brothers Big Sisters of Houston and Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Awareness events. His commitment to community service is a tribute to his parents’ legacy of giving back.
As he steps into retirement, Marshall looks forward to dedicating more time to his family, including his wife, three daughters, 14-year-old son, and grandchildren. His popular bow tie collection, a staple of his on-air persona, will remain a cherished part of his legacy, with some possibly being donated to charities.
In his parting message to KPRC 2 viewers, Marshall expressed gratitude for the warm community embrace he received since his arrival in 1999. He remains optimistic about the future, confident in the continued support and kindness of the Houston community.
Marshall was honored by HABJ at the 2023 Annual Fundraiser and Scholarship Gala, which was held at the Eldorado Room on December 2.
