Charles Porter Jr., an esteemed journalist, whose career at ABC 13 spanned from 1971 to 1978, passed away on Monday, October 2, succumbing to an unidentified lingering illness, as reported by the Houston Chronicle. He reached the age of 81.
Renowned for his resonant voice and the depth of his news reporting, Charles Porter Jr. undertook various impactful documentary projects. His journey in media commenced in radio at KCOH-AM, and he subsequently contributed to KTSU-FM, ultimately serving as a news director at KYOK-AM.
Throughout his illustrious career, Charles was notably dedicated to mentoring journalism students and nurturing the growth of young reporters. One such mentee was the now-veteran ABC 13 journalist, Melanie Lawson, who fondly recalled Charles’ influence on her career. “Charles was one of the nicest people I’ve ever met, and he took me under his wing at ABC 13 Houston during my internship,” Lawson expressed in a heartfelt tribute.
While at ABC 13, Charles Porter Jr. left an indelible mark, notably with his award-winning documentary, “The Sweet By & By,” which celebrated the significance of Black churches. In 1972, he produced a special broadcast commemorating the historic inauguration of the late Barbara Jordan as the first Black woman from the South to be elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington.
Surviving Charles Porter Jr. are his two daughters, two sons, 14 beloved grandchildren, and an extended family of 17 great-grandchildren, testament to the legacy he leaves behind.
