The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) has released a statement explaining its decision to move the dates of its 2027 Convention & Career Fair from Aug. 18–22 to Aug. 4–8, 2027, following concerns raised by the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) over a scheduling conflict.
According to NABJ President Errin Haines, the date change was made in March after leadership determined that returning to the organization’s traditional early-August convention window would better serve members and support the organization’s long-term financial health. NABJ said the earlier dates would make it easier for students, educators and working professionals to attend before fall academic and work schedules begin.
The organization also said the revised dates allow it to honor its long-standing commitment to return to Houston after its planned 2021 convention was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
NABJ said it learned after the change that the new dates overlap with NAHJ’s 2027 convention. The organization said the overlap was unintentional and that leadership has spoken directly with NAHJ officials about the decision. NABJ also reaffirmed its respect for NAHJ and expressed hope that both organizations will continue collaborating while encouraging sponsors and partners to support both conventions.
NABJ said its current focus remains on delivering a successful 2026 Convention & Career Fair.
