The 2025 Houston Association of Black Journalists (HABJ) Sneaker Ball Gala is officially sold out, signaling another highly anticipated and impactful night for Houston’s media and community leaders.
The annual Sneaker Ball Gala, known for its signature pairing of formal attire with stylish sneakers, is one of the organization’s largest fundraisers of the year. Funds raised through the event support scholarships for local college students pursuing careers in journalism, communications, and related fields. These scholarships help remove financial barriers and provide students with the tools and encouragement needed to pursue careers in storytelling and media.

Over the past several years, HABJ has awarded scholarships to students attending colleges and universities throughout the Houston area. Many recipients have gone on to secure internships, newsroom positions, and other opportunities within the media industry, helping to strengthen the next generation of journalists.
While scholarships remain a central focus, the Sneaker Ball Gala offers much more than financial support. The event brings together students, working journalists, media professionals, community leaders, and supporters for an evening centered on connection, mentorship, and recognition. Attendees are given opportunities to network, share experiences, and build relationships that can last well beyond the gala.
Each year, the event also honors journalists and civic leaders who have demonstrated excellence, leadership, and service within the community. By recognizing these individuals, the organization aims to highlight the importance of responsible storytelling and community engagement while inspiring young journalists to follow in their footsteps.
The Sneaker Ball Gala has also become known for its creative and expressive atmosphere. Guests are encouraged to pair sneakers with formal wear, a style choice that reflects individuality and culture while maintaining the elegance of a traditional fundraising event.

Beyond the gala, HABJ remains active throughout the year. The organization offers professional development workshops, training sessions, mentorship opportunities, and community engagement initiatives. These programs are designed to equip aspiring and working journalists with the skills needed to succeed while ensuring diverse voices continue to be represented in Houston’s media.
Organizers say the sold out status of the 2025 gala demonstrates the city’s strong commitment to supporting students and strengthening the local media community.
“This event is about more than celebrating,” one organizer said. “It is about uplifting our scholarship recipients, honoring those who have made a difference, and investing in the future of journalism in Houston.”
With the 2025 Sneaker Ball Gala just weeks away, organizers say attendees can expect a night filled with energy, inspiration, and celebration. The sold out crowd stands as a reminder that investing in students, mentorship, and community remains a priority for the HABJ.
